A guest essay or op-ed is written prose, typically published by an English-language North-American newspaper or magazine. Op-eds usually express the opinion of an author or entity not affiliated with the publication’s editorial board. In 2021, The New York Times—the paper credited with developing and naming the modern op-ed page—announced that it was retiring the label, and would instead call submitted opinion pieces “Guest Essays.”
The Unification movement is short of opportunities for membership-at-large to voice their informed opinion in a civic manner. AppliedUnificationism, a blog published by the Unification Theological Seminary, does explore the application of Unificationism to the wider world. Reformed Unificationism is a space of discourse where the future of the larger Unification movement can be thoughtfully discussed, which may include commentary on or critique of leadership as well as membership − past, present, and/or future. Critique is never personalized nor ad hominem and must be presented in a way that encourages rebuttal or expansion of the ideas expressed.
In other words, knee-jerk put-downs are not acceptable in either the forums or guest essays. Impromptu comments, in contrast to written detailed responses or guest essays, may be entered in a fitting discussion forum on this site.
